Genie and Teeny: Make a Wish by Steven Lenton, HarperCollins
Genie and Teeny is the first in a brand new series by one of our favourite picture book authors and illustrators, Steven Lenton. Grant is a genie with an impressive array of hats. While cap-collecting is one of his strengths, wish-making is not. After a “right royal mistake,” which involved accidentally turning the queen into a snake, Grant finds himself banished from Genie World, and worse – lampless.
When Grant makes a discarded teapot his new home, he makes a new friend too - a lost puppy named Teeny - and vows to reunite Teeny with his owners. What follows is an adventure that’s as funny as it is magical, punctuated with hilarious excerpts from Grant’s favourite book: The Biggest Genie Joke Book Ever. It’s also full of fabulous illustrations by Steven Lenton which help bring the characters to life and add more humour.
I love Steven Lenton's playful and inventive writing style. Genie and Teenie: Make a Wish is ideal for entertaining emerging readers during the summer holidays. There’s even a “draw your own genie” guide in the book, a space for readers to write their own wishes, and lots more free activities on Steven’s website. Just be warned – it may permanently change how you feel about purple!
